Story of the building
Halász street 1. is a 3storey building with an inner courtyard , historicist tenement house. It was built in eclectic style before 1885, but there was earlier a building in medieval times too, and a remaining of this building as an inclusion still the part of current house. This region of 1.district has a unique historical significance. The name of the street literally called Fisherman derived from the fact that in mediavel times there was a lively fish market on this place.
The famous “Black Bear” pharmacy moved into this house in 1885, the owner of the drugstore was Jancs Vilmos. This pharmacy was the 2nd biggest in Buda, which moved from Corvin Square ( Previously Fazekas Square) to Halász street 1.
After the 2nd World War in the socialist era the pharmacy was socialized and the original beautiful furniture was demolished in barbaric style. On the place of the former pharmacy You can find a restaurant, called Halásztanya Vendéglő now on the corner of Fő street and Halász street. There is another restaurant on the corner of Bem rakpart and Halász street offering delicious fish plates.
Before the 2nd World War here was an upholstery shop and even before , in old times a cafeteria was run by nuns, here and in the small frontage garden looking to the direction of Danube nuns served cacao and café with whipped cream. The winery run by capuchin convent was on the other side in Fő street.

Until the socialization a hairdresser saloon and a sport shop also operated on Fő street and on the side of Danube bank there was police guard room on the ground floor.
The house has an excessively puritan entrance. Next to the entrance door there was a textile storage entrance previously which was occupied by wood trade storage. In the house there were spacious 4room apartment with street view and small flats for servant with a courtyard view. On the first floor a branch bank operated on the side of the main stairway. Maybe it is worth to remember of some former resident of this house. Gobbi Hilda famous actress lived here , spent her childhood in this house as she remembered about this fact in her autobiography.
The house thanks for the excellent builders still in a normal condition and the apartments are continuously renewing.
