History of the region
Toboz street is located on Mátyáshegy , it is a region in 3rd district in Buda , a protected area of a national park in front of Pálvölgyi stalactite cave. Mátyáshegy bounded Remetehegy to the north, and bordered by Pálvölgy and Szépvölgy to the south and west , to the East you can see the roofs of houses of Óbuda and , line of the Danube, Margaret Island and the Pest side of our capital. On clear days you can see the whole panorama of Budapest and the surrounding mountain ranges. Mátyáshegyi area includes the following: Hegyoldal street from Szépvölgyi road - Nyereg road - Remetehegyi road - Folyondár street - until Szépvölgyi road , Hegyoldal street.
In 1874 got its name as a mirror transalation from german “Matthiasberg”The urban area Mátyás-hegy is still undeveloped , you can find houses only on the foothills . Once on the side of Mátyás-hegy there were open pit mining of limestone . One of these quarries towering in front of the Pálvölgyi stalactite cave's parking is "large quarry", just at the foot of Mátyás Cave sealed entrance, while a little farther, you can find the "east quarry " the only access from Mátyáshegyi road on an unmarked, hidden road.
Once most part of Buda, including Pálvölgy were woodlands where royal hunting took place, that's why it's called the Garden of the King Matthias, situated on Glück Frigyes road and the surrounding area. Nowadays only some topographical elements and some traces of castle walls resemble to the hunting ground of Mátyás. The Buda hills have always been popular places to visit from old times onwards and were always well-permeable from all directions. You can admire beautiful panorama of Budapest from several lookout tower, but the closest is “ Árpád” lookout tower. From Toboz Street you can easily reach the bus end terminal, located on top of the hill and here are several starts of hiking trails, which is great for running. Fenyőgyöngye Restaurant is ideal choice for a lunch, pleasant and quick cuisine attracts many people.
British International School and its institutions are located in the eastern, north-eastern direction of our property. The institution provides proper, north English type of education , modern facilities, stylish and healthy environment where the teaching takes place between 4 and 18 years of age.
On the other side of the road you can find Kiscelli Castle and Forest Park .Baroque-style buildings standing on a hill above the “Bécsi” road of Óbuda was built according to the plans of the Viennese architect Johann Entzenhoffer between 1745-1758 and was originally a convent of the Trinitarians. The two-storey friary was connected to monastery church on the north wing and at the time copy of devotional statue of Small Cell (German: Zell Klein) was placed in the pattern of famous Austrian pilgrimage site of Mariazell and this place became known as a place of pilgrimage as well.
Joseph the 2nd stopped to support the convent and eventually closed the monastery because of economical reasons, it was expensive for the state, in times of war the monastery paid a ransom of captives. The complex has gone to the property of the chamber, actually the state, it served as a military hospital , after that as a barracks, and as a warehouse , and ruined down completely. The neglected property was privatized in 1911 . Max Schmidt furniture factory owner and art collector bought it up, renovated and used as elegant apartment, as a showroom partly, the small part of the building complex for workshops. Finally in 1935 he left it in his testament to the State, to the Capital in a condition to use it for the purpose of museum . The fame of Max Schmidt survived not only because of the generous gift to us but because of his fascination with fairer sex. Namely he had beautiful and famous lovers, including the ill-fated dancer of Budapest Orpheum, Elza Mágnás who became here a victim of a robbery murder by her servants because of her jeweleries. The building complex served the Budapest Museum of local history and art collections also placed here. The museum seriously injured in 1944-45 cause the Germans were hiding here. During the battles of the November in 1956 it also suffered damage. Since then, much of the monastery building was renovated , a former church building was converted into a modern exhibition space to welcome visitors. In the latter, in addition to the temporary exhibitions which are performed, often casual classical music performances and other events are held.
